Overview

Battle of Countries (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a free daily minigame. We are committed to handling your data minimally and transparently. No account or sign-up is required to play.

What we collect

  • Hashed IP address — Your IP address is immediately hashed using SHA-256 with a secret salt before storage. The raw IP is never written to disk. The hash is used only to enforce one submission per player per day and to detect your country.
  • Country code — Inferred from your IP address or network headers. This determines which country you represent on the scoreboard.
  • Game scores — Your raw score and the duration of your game session. Scores are associated with your country, not with you personally.
  • Device identifier (localStorage)— When you first visit, a randomly generated UUID is stored in your browser's localStorage under the key boc_device_id. This identifier is used to track your session for multiplayer matchmaking and to prevent duplicate submissions. It is not linked to your name, email, or any personally identifiable information. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data.
  • Multiplayer session data — If you play a multiplayer game, your device identifier and game moves are temporarily stored in our cache to facilitate real-time gameplay. This data is ephemeral and is deleted when the game session ends.
  • Game suggestions (optional) — If you submit a minigame idea, we collect the idea text and optionally a name and email address you provide. See below.

What we do not collect

  • Raw IP addresses (only the irreversible hash is stored)
  • Names, emails, or any personally identifiable information to play
  • Browser cookies for tracking or advertising purposes
  • Device fingerprints derived from browser or hardware characteristics
  • Location data beyond country-level geolocation

Game suggestions

If you submit a minigame idea, you may optionally provide your name and email address. This information is used solely to follow up on your suggestion if we have questions or to notify you if your idea is implemented. It is never shared with third parties, sold, or used for marketing.

Analytics

We use Vercel Analytics to understand general usage patterns (page views, traffic sources). Vercel Analytics does not use cookies, does not track individuals across sessions, and does not collect personally identifiable information. Data is anonymized and aggregated. For more information, see Vercel's Analytics privacy policy.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party infrastructure to operate the service:

  • Supabase — Database storage for game scores and player records
  • Upstash Redis — Caching, scoreboard computation, and ephemeral multiplayer session state
  • Vercel — Hosting, deployment, and analytics

Each provider processes data in accordance with their own privacy policies and applicable data protection law.

Data retention

Game scores are retained to support ongoing daily, weekly, and monthly scoreboards and the Hall of Fame. IP hashes associated with scores are retained for the duration of the scoring period. Suggestion submissions are retained until reviewed.

Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights under GDPR (EU/EEA), UK GDPR, or CCPA (California) including the right to access, correct, or delete data associated with you. Because we store only hashed IPs and no names or accounts, we cannot identify your records without your IP hash.

If you have a privacy request or concern, please contact us at the address below and we will respond within 30 days.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Significant changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
